Shopify only reports profit on costs you recorded before the sale — and four apps that price around it
Shopify's profit reports are more capable than most comparison articles admit — the order-level report already includes shipping costs and duties. The real gaps are three: profit is only reported for items that had a cost recorded at the time of sale, Cost per item is a single static number with no landed cost, and fees live in a different report than margin. Here is what TrueProfit, Juicy Profit Analytics, Profit Calc, and BeProfit add, and how their bills diverge from $49 to $249 at the same order volume. Researched September 5, 2026.
Shopify now credits every POS sale to a staff member automatically — it still won't calculate the commission
Since July 6, 2026, Shopify POS attributes sales to the staff member who is pinned in by default. That gets you four retail reports on POS Pro, at $89/month per location — and no commission rate, no payout, and nothing at all for online orders. Here is how POS Staff Commission Tracker, Easyteam, ManageMate, Sales Reps Commission Manager, and CSS Sales Team price that gap, on five different denominators. Researched September 5, 2026.
Shopify's Native Cancel Button Asks No Questions — and Seven Apps Price the Follow-Up From $0 to $599 a Month
The free Shopify Subscriptions app gives subscribers a four-step cancel path with no reason survey, no pause-instead prompt, and no save offer — and Shopify's own checkout disclosure promises they can cancel anytime from their account, wording that only Plus stores can edit. A cancellation flow is an app feature, and every vendor puts it on a different rung: PayWhirl includes it free-to-install, Seal Subscriptions from $9.95/month, Appstle from $30/month, Recharge from $25/month, Loop from $99/month plus 1.0%, Skio only at $599/month. At 500 subscribers and $25,000/month in subscription revenue the same capability costs $24.95 or $949 depending on the denominator. California's amended Automatic Renewal Law, effective July 1, 2025, also caps how much friction that flow may add. Researched September 5, 2026.
Your dunning settings can't fix most failed subscription payments — the error code decides
Shopify returns more than 50 distinct billing-attempt error codes, and a retry schedule only helps with a fraction of them. Here is what Shopify Subscriptions handles natively, which failures retries can never recover, why out-of-stock renewals never enter dunning at all, and how Appstle, Seal, Loop, and Recharge price the gap. Switching Shopify subscription apps: your gateway decides whether the cards come with you
Every subscription app advertises free white-glove migration. None of them can override the one thing that decides the outcome: where your subscribers' payment methods are actually vaulted. Here is what Shopify's own documentation says about token portability, PAN migration, and Braintree wallets — and how Shopify Subscriptions, Recharge, Loop, Appstle, and Seal each handle the import. Shopify's Try Before You Buy Switches Off Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay — and Four Apps Bill the Difference Four Ways
Try Before You Buy is a native Shopify purchase option, not an app-only hack — but the Help Center restriction list is the part nobody quotes. TBYB orders can't use accelerated checkouts, so Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay are off. No local delivery, no in-store pickup, no customized checkouts, no Buy X get Y, and Online Store or Custom Storefront only. Separately, Shopify Payments authorizations last 7 days, and extending them is Plus-only with a 1.75% charge. TryNow, Tryon, Try Before You Buy with Mirra and TryBee price the gap on four different denominators: at 2,000 trial orders a month the bill runs from $399.99 to $8,465. Researched September 5, 2026.
Shopify's App Store Has Three Ways of Telling You an App Is Dead. One of Them Is a Working Install Button.
When a Shopify app goes away, its App Store listing lands in one of three states, and we checked all three on September 16, 2026. Stocky stopped working on August 31 and its listing still shows a black Install button, a 3.0 rating from 211 reviews, and 'Free to install.' Oberlo and Kit show a one-sentence tombstone that preserves a Website link — Kit's now redirects to the Shopify homepage. Shopify Ping returns no listing at all. The reason none of this reaches you is structural: shopify.dev's sunsetting checklist assigns every notification to the developer, the 60-day revocation notice in the unpublished-app FAQ goes to the Partner's business email, and appUninstall removes an app 'without requiring the merchant to act.' Shopify documents an admin notification for apps broken by API changes and none for apps that are withdrawn. Meanwhile the Help Center states Shopify 'can't remove or cancel a pending third-party app charge,' and routes refunds to a developer you reach through the listing that no longer exists. Verified against Shopify Help Center, shopify.dev, and four live en-US App Store listings on September 16, 2026.
ChatGPT Never Got In-Chat Checkout for Shopify Merchants — Google AI Mode, Copilot, and Meta Quietly Did
OpenAI's September 2025 Instant Checkout launch promised Shopify's 1M+ merchants native in-chat purchases. By March 2026 that plan was scaled back for ChatGPT specifically. Shopify's current Help Center documentation confirms ChatGPT is discovery-only with a redirect to your own checkout, while Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta got real Shopify-powered direct checkout instead — and none of your GA4 or Meta pixels fire when a customer buys there. Researched from Shopify Help Center and official sources, September 4, 2026.
