Shopify Translate & Adapt Auto-Translates Only Two Languages — What Happens at Language Three
Shopify lets you sell in up to 20 languages on every plan except Lite, but the free Translate & Adapt app auto-translates a maximum of two. Here is what breaks at language three, what the app can never translate, and how langify and Weglot actually meter their pricing. Researched August 31, 2026.
Shopify's Free Translate & Adapt Auto-Translates Exactly Two Languages — Here's Everything Else It Won't Do
Shopify sells in up to 20 languages on every plan above Lite, but the free Translate & Adapt app auto-translates only two of them. Tags, product images, and collection filters can't be translated at all — and no paid app fixes the tags part. Meanwhile hreflang and international sitemaps are already automatic in Markets. The real boundary lines, plus how five paid apps price themselves on four incompatible units. Researched August 31, 2026.
Shopify Sells in 20 Languages. It Auto-Translates 2.
Every Shopify plan except Lite sells in up to 20 languages. The free Translate & Adapt app auto-translates a maximum of 2. Here is what falls in the gap, what Shopify will not translate at all, and why Weglot, langify, and Transcy bill on words, languages, and AI tokens respectively. Researched August 31, 2026.
On Shopify's Basic Plan, Your Blog Has Exactly One Possible Author — and the Admin API Doesn't Enforce That Rule at All
Shopify's Help Center is explicit: you can only select the store owner or a staff member with admin access as a blog post author, and collaborators and POS-only staff never appear in the dropdown. Shopify's own plan table puts staff accounts at 0 on Basic, 5 on Grow, and 15 on Advanced — so a byline is an admin login, and on Basic there is only one. The Admin API has no such rule: articleCreate's documented example passes author: { name: "Test User" } as a plain string. That single gap is what every guest-author app on the App Store is built on. Compared six real apps — Custom Authors, Hyve ‑ Custom Blog Authors, LFS Author Signature, AuthorCraft | Author Signature, Impulsafy ‑ EEAT Author, and JSON‑LD Author Schema & Bios — by USD pricing, what they actually output, permissions requested, and review record. Between them they have 18 reviews. Shopify documentation, App Store listings, and Dawn source verified September 9, 2026.
Your Shopify API Rate Limit Is Not Shared Between Apps. What a Sync App Sells You Is Threads and Schedules.
Shopify states it in one sentence on its API limits page: rate limits are based on the combination of the app and store, so calls from one app don't affect another app's limits on the same store. Uninstalling apps to make your inventory sync faster does nothing. The published lever is the plan — 100 points per second on Standard, 200 on Advanced, 1,000 on Plus — and Matrixify's own documentation says Shopify grants it a 300% increase on regular stores and 500% on Plus, a number that appears nowhere in Shopify's docs. The lever merchants actually control is the app's own plan. Matrixify sells parallel threads. syncX: Stock Sync sells schedule frequency at $1 per additional faster schedule. Syncio sells imported product count. Trunk bills on monthly orders. Four apps, four denominators for the same job, and none of them is the API limit. Your Shopify SMS App Can't Send a Single Message Until a Carrier Approves Your Store — and You Can't Collect Subscribers While You Wait
The SMS apps on the Shopify App Store install in under a minute and then do nothing for a week. US and Canadian carriers require toll-free number verification before a single text leaves your store, and the published timelines are 2–5 business days for Shopify Messaging and Klaviyo, around 5 business days and up to 2 weeks for Omnisend, and roughly 3–10 business days for Postscript. Omnisend states plainly that there is no expedited verification option. The part that costs real money is quieter: the opt-in confirmation message is itself an SMS, so an unverified number cannot send it, which means you cannot add US or Canadian subscribers either. Postscript says unverified numbers are blocked from sending double opt-in 'reply Y' messages, 'impacting subscriber list growth.' Shopify, Klaviyo and Omnisend each publish their rejection reasons, and they are not what merchants expect: a single checkbox is not an accepted age gate, a combined 'email and SMS' consent box gets rejected, and a privacy policy that mentions sharing data with third parties fails outright. Three Apps Won a 2026 Shopify Build Award. The Laurel Wreath on a Listing Never Expires — the Badge Above It Does
Shopify's 2026 Build Awards named exactly three apps — Discount Kit, Easyteam POS Time Clock In, and Smile: Loyalty Program Rewards — out of a catalog the App Store puts at more than 16,000. The award shows up on those listings as a laurel-wreath element reading 2026 / Build Award winner / For innovation and impact. The four 2025 winners still carry theirs fifteen months later, because nothing in Shopify's documentation retires it. Built for Shopify, sitting one line above it, works the opposite way: published criteria, annual review, sixty days to fix a failure, automatic removal, automatic reinstatement. Shopify publishes numeric thresholds for merely being eligible to appear in a story page — 50 net installs on paid plans, five reviews — and no criteria at all for winning the award. Plus the third place the phrase appears: copy the developer wrote. Verified against primary sources on September 12, 2026.
Your Shopify POS Receipt Is the One Surface No App Can Touch — and the Liquid Escape Hatch Closes January 1, 2027
Shopify's POS receipt code editor is deprecated. Every store is moved to the visual editor on January 1, 2027, and activating it is irreversible. Liquid survives only as a bounded block in the header and footer: 50 KB, no CSS, seven tags banned, and nothing at all on offline-checkout orders. No app can fill the gap either — the current POS UI Extensions reference lists eight surfaces an app may appear on and the printed receipt is not one of them, and Shopify's own free Order Printer listing states plainly that customizing POS printer receipts is not supported. What apps can do, since the 2026-07 Printing API, is print their own separate document to your receipt printer. Five real apps compared on price and on what they actually put on paper.
