Shopify's Help Center Names Countdown Timers and 'X People Bought This' as Potentially Deceptive Marketing
Shopify's Consumer protection laws page lists three specific urgency patterns as examples of potentially deceptive marketing: low-stock notices that aren't true, countdown timers that aren't true, and 'X people bought this today' claims that aren't true. That page sits under a heading warning that following consumer protection law is what keeps your store running uninterrupted. Meanwhile the FTC's Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule — which everyone cites in this context — does not cover countdown timers at all. Ten real urgency, scarcity and social proof apps compared on two axes nobody publishes: whether the number they display comes from real Shopify inventory, and what unit each one meters. Shopify Has No Virtual Waiting Room, and the Only Throttle It Documents Isn't One
Shopify's Help Center page on flash sales never mentions a waiting room or a queue — it tells you to build a password page. The only throttle Shopify documents is a checkout-level throttle on the Storefront API that returns a 200 Throttled error to your code, not a queue page to your shopper. Meanwhile the Shopify App Store waiting-room category has exactly one genuine listing. CrowdHandler Waiting Room, Queue-it and Queue-Fair compared on how the queue is enforced, whether it can protect checkout itself, whether it's first-in-first-out or a randomized draw, and the three incompatible pricing units nobody converts for you. Your iPhone Customers Can't Receive Shopify Web Push Unless They Add Your Store to Their Home Screen
Shopify has no native web push. Shopify Messaging covers email, SMS, and WhatsApp — that is the whole native list. So web push is an app decision, and it comes with a reach ceiling almost nobody writes about: on iOS and iPadOS, Web Push only works for sites the shopper has added to their Home Screen as a web app. Apple has required this since 16.4 and still does. On top of that, the six apps still worth looking at meter three completely different things — notifications sent, subscribers held, or nothing at all — so a $13 plan and a $49 plan can be the cheaper one depending only on how often you send. How Smart Agent Blog and Other Shopify Blog Apps Divide the Work
Smart Agent Blog compared against Bloggle, Tapita, and All in one blog on the same axes. Pricing, AI generation limits, and post-publish analysis, all verified against Shopify App Store listings as of September 2, 2026.
Shopify Publishes No Limit on How Many Apps You Install. It Publishes Six Limits on How Many Can Do the Same Job.
Shopify's Help Center page on finding and choosing apps lists five installation requirements an app can have, and a count of already-installed apps is not among them. The documented limits sit somewhere else entirely: on the surfaces two apps want at the same time. Only one app can own the post-purchase page. Three apps fit in a highlighted area of the checkout and accounts editor. Twenty-five automatic discounts exist across the whole store, and app-created discounts count toward the same twenty-five — a ceiling Regios Technologies documents in its own help center as an error its customers hit. Shopify Functions allows 25 active functions per Function API. Flow allows 1,000 workflows but warns above 10 on one trigger. A JSON template renders 25 sections and 50 blocks per section, and app blocks sit inside that allowance. Shopify Accessibility Doesn't End at Installing a Widget — What the EAA and a $1M FTC Order Actually Changed
Shopify's own help center says that following its accessibility guidelines "doesn't guarantee that your online store is fully accessible." The European Accessibility Act has been enforceable since 28 June 2025, e-commerce is in scope, and where your business is registered doesn't matter. Meanwhile the US FTC made accessibility widget vendor accessiBe pay $1 million and barred it from claiming automated tools can make any site WCAG compliant. A look at all 130 apps in Shopify's Accessibility category, the three types hiding inside it, and what merchants should actually do first. Researched September 1, 2026.
Shopify's Order CSV Has No Payment Fee Column — And in Japan, the Accounting App Shelf Is Nearly Empty
Search the Shopify App Store for "accounting" and you get 538 apps. Search it for Money Forward, Japan's second-largest cloud accounting vendor, and you get zero — because Money Forward ended its Shopify data connection on June 30, 2023, citing loss of access to the Shopify API. Search for freee and you get exactly one app, rated 2.8. Meanwhile Shopify's own order export CSV contains no payment-fee column at all, and Shopify Tax's documented scope covers the US, EU, UK, and Canada — not Japan. Researched September 1, 2026.
Shopify Affiliate Apps Charge on Four Different Denominators — "2% of Referral Revenue" and "2.9% of Commission" Are Not Comparable
Shopify affiliate apps mix four incompatible pricing models: flat monthly, monthly plus a percentage of referral revenue, entirely free, and a processing fee on commission paid through your Shopify bill. Shopify Collabs charges 2.9% of the commission amount. UpPromote charges 2% of referral revenue. Same symbol, different denominator, order-of-magnitude difference at scale. Also: Collabs commission runs through your Shopify invoice in USD, and the first-party app has the lowest rating of the five. Shopify Collabs, UpPromote, BixGrow, Affilitrak, and GOAFFPRO compared on identical axes. Researched September 1, 2026.
