Shopify's Bot Protection Is Plus-Only, Lasts 60 Minutes, and Most Blocker Apps Run in the Browser

Shopify's bot protection feature is Shopify Plus only, has to be switched on by Plus Support, covers at most 500 products, and runs for a maximum of 60 minutes per event. The hCaptcha every store already has is a different thing entirely — it covers contact forms, comments, and legacy login pages, not checkout. We checked six real apps on the US App Store on September 2, 2026 and found that most block from a theme app embed, meaning a bot that posts straight to a cart or checkout URL never executes the code. Blockify's own support team says so in writing. Shopify also documents that the obvious workaround — putting Cloudflare in front of your storefront — is unsupported and actively reduces Shopify's own bot detection. The most useful free option here is a first-party Shopify app sitting at 2.2 stars.

Shopify Stores Thousands of Codes Under One Discount. Its Admin Just Can't Create Them.

Every listicle on bulk discount codes stops at "Shopify can't do it, install an app." That framing is wrong in a way that costs merchants money. Shopify's data model, checkout, and API all handle many codes under a single parent discount — the admin UI is the only piece missing, and the API path is capped at 250 codes per call against a 20,000,000-code cumulative ceiling no app can raise. We verified the native boundary against six Shopify Help Center and shopify.dev pages, then priced six currently listed generator apps on September 2, 2026 — including the one where being on Shopify Plus quintuples your bill and the one where it doesn't cost you a cent extra.

Shopify Carbon Offset Apps: Who Pays Decides Everything, and on Non-Plus Stores the Customer Cannot Pay at Checkout

Every carbon offset app on the Shopify App Store answers one question first: does the merchant pay, does the customer opt in, or both. That answer decides the billing model, the storefront surface, and what you are allowed to say afterwards. We priced six apps in the US App Store on September 2, 2026. Shopify's own help documentation states the Planet checkout extension is Shopify Plus only, so on a non-Plus store the customer contribution lives in a theme badge, not in checkout. The per-unit prices are not comparable either: Ecologi lists $0.28 per kg of carbon removal while Greenspark lists $0.01 per kg CO2e on its paid plans. And CrbonFree's pricing card says merchants retain 40% of what the customer pays for the offset, while Shopify's Planet documentation says Shopify takes no cut at all.

Shopify Checkout Customization Without Plus: The Gate Is Per Page, Not Per App

Shopify Plus is not required to customize checkout — it is required for three specific pages. Shopify's availability table gates UI extensions on the information, shipping, and payment pages behind Plus, while the Thank you page, Order status page, and all customer accounts pages have been open to Basic and higher since May 21, 2024. Public apps built with Shopify Functions run on any plan; only custom apps need Plus. But in the US and Canada, payment customization on a non-Plus plan cannot touch the credit card fields, and post-purchase offers never appear on Apple Pay, Klarna, Affirm, AfterPay, Amazon Pay, Google Pay, or gift card orders. Every legacy workaround is gone: checkout.liquid and additional scripts sunset August 28, 2025, non-Plus script tags August 26, 2026, Shopify Scripts June 30, 2026. Seven real apps compared, with prices and ratings verified September 2, 2026.

Shopify Has No Donation Feature — and "100% Goes to the Charity" Means Three Different Things

Shopify has no native way to collect a customer donation or a round-up at checkout. The closest built-in feature is Tipping, and Shopify's own help center suggests relabeling it "Donations" — but tipping caps at $1,000, breaks with Shop Pay Installments, isn't supported by the Subscription API, and has no charity, no disbursement, and no receipt. So merchants install an app, and that is where the real decision hides. We read the terms and help centers of five donation apps on September 2, 2026 and found three incompatible answers to one question: who is the donor of record. ShoppingGives issues the donation receipt to the merchant, Pledgeling Foundation emails it to the shopper, and DailyKarma tells shoppers they will not get a charity receipt at all. The fee models differ just as sharply — on $1,000 of monthly donations, the charity receives $1,000, $841, or $870 depending on which app you picked.

Shopify Collective requirements and incompatibilities, and where dropshipping apps fill the gap

Shopify Collective is free on every Shopify plan and has no minimum sales requirement, but a handful of hard constraints decide whether it works for your store at all. This article checks the current retailer and supplier rules against the Shopify Help Center, including the 38 supported countries, the same-country and same-currency rule, and the incompatibility lists that differ depending on which side you are on. It also covers the sync window that Shopify itself warns can cause overselling. Then it compares DSers, Spocket, Zendrop, and Auto DS on the same axes, since those apps solve the same "sell without holding inventory" problem under completely different conditions. Written for US merchants, with pricing checked on the Shopify App Store on September 2, 2026.

Shopify Flow Has No Action That Changes a Price. Here's What That Costs You.

We read Shopify's entire first-party Flow action reference and confirmed it: there is no action that writes a product price. Shopify also has no way to see a competitor's price — but it does ship a free first-party pricing app that reads your own data instead, and that distinction decides which tool you need. We priced five currently listed competitor price monitoring apps on September 2, 2026, showed the effective cost per 1,000 SKUs (it ranges from about $13 to about $199), explained why the metering unit "Products / Variants" is the trap in this category, and covered the MAP and algorithmic-pricing questions every US reseller should raise with counsel before switching on auto-repricing.

Customer Account Apps Aren't Plus-Gated — But Shopify Only Gives You 12 Block Slots

Shopify's App Store lists 1,552 apps that extend customer accounts, and unlike checkout, the surface is open on Basic and higher — the Plus wall sits on the information, shipping, and payment pages, not on accounts. The real ceiling is smaller and better documented than merchants expect: 23 extension targets exist, only 3 of them are block targets, those 3 expose 12 merchant-selectable placements between them, and Shopify caps each highlighted area at 3 apps. Shopify also publishes twelve things it says are simply unsupported, including custom fields before sign-in, hiding built-in elements, and adding sign-in methods with an app. This article verifies all of it against help.shopify.com and shopify.dev on September 2, 2026, separates the two architectures that customer account apps actually use, and prices four live apps that bill on four different denominators.
