Shopify Order Routing Is Not Plus-Only — It Is Five Rules, and Apps Work After Checkout

Shopify's native order routing gives every plan five rules you can add, edit, reorder and delete in the admin — including Use ranked locations and Use location metafields. Shopify Plus is required only for custom app-supplied rules, and that Functions API is still Beta by request, so we could not confirm any generally available App Store app using it. Every routing app we checked reassigns the location after checkout via fulfillmentOrderMove, which fails once a 3PL request is SUBMITTED or ACCEPTED. Five real apps compared with verified USD pricing. Researched September 3, 2026.

Shopify pickup points for US stores: no native option, and two separate gates on checkout

Shopify's native pickup points feature is in early access and limited to stores in France, Italy, Spain, and the UK, with only Evri, Colissimo, Correos, Mondial Relay, and Poste Italiane as carriers — US stores are not eligible as of September 2026. Public App Store apps cannot use that native API at all, so a third-party app is the only path, and even then the picker may not reach checkout. Two different requirements cause that: Carrier Service API apps need third-party carrier-calculated shipping (Advanced or Plus, or Grow on annual billing or a paid add-on), while checkout extensibility apps need Shopify Plus. The fallback differs by vendor — Atlas Pickup Points moves selection to the Thank you page from $39/month, Octolize Pickup Points PRO moves it to the cart page from $9.99/month. Atlas is the only one of the three apps here that publishes a per-country carrier list, and its United States page names FedEx, UPS, and DHL, with no USPS. Researched September 3, 2026.

Shopify Flow Has Three Inventory Triggers and Zero Price Triggers — What That Costs You in Price Drop Alerts

Shopify Flow can fire on Product variant back in stock, out of stock, and inventory quantity changed. There is no price-change trigger, on any plan, including Plus. There is also no native place for a shopper to say notify me when this gets cheaper. The three back-in-stock apps merchants most often already have do not do price drops either. Across six real price-drop apps the billing unit is almost always notifications sent per month, and free plans cap at 20 to 50 sends — one markdown clears that in an afternoon. Verified USD pricing and Klaviyo's Price Drop flow compared. Researched September 3, 2026.

Shopify Can Collect a Monogram. It Cannot Render One.

Live preview is not a Shopify feature, and no plan upgrade adds it. The seven customizer apps that do add it bill in three structurally different ways, and at 2,000 personalized items a month the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive is roughly 120x. Pricing verified September 2, 2026.

Shopify Doesn't Build Your Product Feed. Google, Microsoft, Pinterest and Snap Do — and Here's What They Won't Let You Change

The common premise that Shopify merchants cannot reach Microsoft Advertising, Pinterest or Snapchat without a paid app is wrong. Free first-party channels exist for all three, but Shopify does not build any of them: Google & YouTube is published by Google LLC, Microsoft Channel by Microsoft, Pinterest by PINTEREST inc, Snapchat Ads by Snap Ads. Each syncs a single catalog per channel, and Shopify's own CSV documentation states that the Google Shopping columns for Custom Label 0 through 4, MPN, Gender, Age Group and Condition are ignored by the Google & YouTube channel. Eight feed apps compared on price, field control and named destinations, with USD pricing verified September 3, 2026.

Shopify Ships a Native Buy Again Button — and It Silently Drops Your Line Item Properties

Customer accounts already put a Buy again button on the order status page and the orders page, and you can toggle it off in the checkout and accounts editor. What it does not do is carry line item properties into the new cart — a limitation Shopify staff confirmed in February 2025 and that merchants were still reporting in July 2026. This is where reorder apps earn their money. Cart permalinks are the free workaround, with real ceilings: properties on the first line only, no selling plans, no comma in a discount code. Six real apps compared on surfaces, property handling, reminders, and verified USD pricing. Researched September 3, 2026.

Excluding a State From a Shipping Profile Doesn't Block One Product. It Blocks the Whole Order.

If you sell alcohol, vape, kratom, CBD or firearms accessories, the workaround everyone recommends — remove the restricted state from that product's shipping profile — does not do what you think. Shopify combines rates from every profile in the cart into one rate, so a missing rate on one SKU makes the entire order unshippable. There is no native per-product, per-state restriction. The apps that fill the gap enforce at four different points in the funnel, and only one of them survives a determined buyer or an express checkout. Also: public App Store apps containing Shopify Functions work on every plan, not just Plus — which is the difference between a $6 app and a Plus-only one. Prices verified on the Shopify App Store September 3, 2026.

Shopify's Return Rules Are Scoped to the Order, Not the Customer — Which Returns Apps Actually Enforce Against Serial Returners

Shopify's native return and cancellation rules cover return window, return shipping cost, restocking fee, final sale products or collections, and per-market variants in early access — there is no documented rule condition based on a customer's return history. Shopify Protect covers fraudulent and unrecognized chargebacks on eligible Shop Pay orders, not return fraud, and fraud analysis scores the order at checkout rather than the returner. Seven App Store apps compared on risk scoring, customer-history rules, blocklists and whether automation can actually stop a return. ReturnZap exposes Customer total number of returns on its $39/month Pro plan, AfterShip's anti-fraud workflows can add a customer email to a blocklist on Premium at $119/month, and Loop's own documentation says its fraud model takes no action on returns by itself.
