What you will learn

When a cart on your store contains a subscription, Shopify puts a sentence in front of the customer that you probably have never read closely:
You may cancel anytime by going to your account or contacting the store.
That is Shopify's default checkout disclosure, and on any plan below Shopify Plus you cannot change it. Your checkout is making a promise about how easy cancellation will be. The question this article answers is what happens on the other side of that promise — and how much the software that shapes it costs.
What Shopify does natively
More than merchants expect on the subscription side, and nothing at all on the retention side.
The free first-party Shopify Subscriptions app is a real subscription engine. It creates auto-billed contracts on weekly, monthly, or yearly cadences, applies dollar, percentage, buy X get Y, or fixed-amount discounts, renders a widget on the online store, sends order notifications, and reports on active, paused, and canceled subscriptions.

The customer portal is also real. Signed into their customer account, a subscriber can edit payment details, change the shipping address, skip an upcoming order, pause, resume, and cancel. Shopify documents the cancel path precisely: the customer clicks Subscriptions, clicks the subscription, clicks Cancel subscription under Overview, and clicks Cancel subscription again in the dialog to confirm. A Subscription canceled banner appears.
Four steps, one confirmation, no questions. Shopify's Help Center adds the part that matters commercially: "Canceling a subscription cannot be undone."
What the native flow never does:
- No reason capture. The confirmation dialog does not ask why. You end the month knowing your churn number and nothing about its composition.
- No pause-instead prompt. Pause exists in the portal, and Shopify's documentation names it as the alternative to canceling — but the documented cancel dialog contains only a confirm button. There is no documented prompt inside it offering the pause the customer probably wanted.
- No save offer. There is no discount, no skip, no frequency change, no product swap presented before the cancel completes.
- No branching. Every subscriber sees the same dialog whether they are on order two or order twenty.
Verdict: if you want anything between the cancel button and the canceled contract, that is an app feature. The interesting part is that seven vendors put it on seven different rungs of their pricing ladders.
The legal ceiling on how hard you may push
Before comparing save-offer builders, know the boundary they operate inside, because it is a US-specific one and it moved recently.
California's Automatic Renewal Law was amended by AB 2863, signed September 24, 2024, effective July 1, 2025. Per Davis Wright Tremaine's analysis of the bill, the amendments require express affirmative consent to the renewal terms separately from the purchase, and make click-to-cancel the rule: consumers must be able to cancel as easily as they signed up. Critically for this article, the law "includes specifics on how businesses may convey 'save' offers when consumers attempt to cancel (such as a new discounted offer or retention benefit), disclosures that must be made during the cancellation attempt, and the requirement to act promptly if the consumer persists in wanting to cancel."
Federally, the picture is unsettled rather than permissive. The Eighth Circuit vacated the FTC's Negative Option Rule — the "click-to-cancel" rule — on July 8, 2025, days before its compliance date, on procedural grounds. The FTC restarted the rulemaking: per Gibson Dunn, a draft Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking went to OIRA on January 30, 2026, with comments due April 13, 2026, and enforcement under ROSCA continued throughout.
The practical reading for a US merchant: a cancellation flow that surveys the reason and offers a pause or a discount is normal commerce. A flow that buries the exit, loops the customer through screens, or delays acting once they persist is the specific pattern regulators are aimed at. Buy the flow builder for reason data and a single well-matched offer, not for friction.
Which plan actually unlocks a cancellation flow
This is where the apps diverge most, and where published comparisons are usually silent. Every row below comes from the app's own Shopify App Store pricing section or vendor pricing page, checked September 5, 2026.
| App | Cheapest plan with a cancellation flow | Plan price | Vendor's name for the feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Subscriptions | None | — | Not offered |
| PayWhirl Subscriptions | FREE | Free to install (3% after the first $5,000 processed) | Cancellation Prevention Flows |
| Seal Subscriptions App | RISING STAR | $9.95/month | Custom subscription cancellation flow |
| Recharge Subscriptions App | 25-50 | $25/month | Smart Cancellation Prevention |
| Appstle℠ Subscriptions App | BUSINESS (Biz) | $30/month | Retention Tools & Cancellation Control |
| Loop Subscriptions App | Starter | $99/month + 1.0% per transaction | Personalized cancellation flows & offers |
| Skio, a Recharge Company | Scale | $599/month + 1% + 20¢ per transaction | Multi-Step Cancel Flow Builder |
Three things fall out of that table.
Free tiers mostly do not include it. Seal's free plan (50 subscriptions) and Loop's Free Forever plan (50 active subscriptions) both stop short of it, as does Appstle's free tier. PayWhirl is the exception: Cancellation Prevention Flows is listed in the FREE plan's feature set, paid for through the transaction rate instead of a monthly fee.
Appstle and Seal gate on different things. Seal's ladder is capped by subscription count — RISING STAR is up to 250 subscriptions, LEGEND up to 500, MEGA STAR up to 50,000 — with 0% transaction fees throughout. Appstle's ladder is capped by monthly subscription revenue: FREE up to $500/month, STARTER $10 up to $5,000, BUSINESS $30 up to $15,000, BUSINESS PREMIUM $100 up to $100,000, also with 0% transaction fees. Two stores with identical revenue but different average order values land on different Seal plans and the same Appstle plan.
Recharge's cheapest entry point is only on the App Store. The Recharge listing shows a 25-50 plan at $25/month described as "no transaction fees for your first 50 subscribers" with the "Entire Starter feature set," which includes Smart Cancellation Prevention. That plan does not appear on Recharge's own pricing page, which starts at $99/month. If you are under 50 subscribers, install from the App Store listing rather than the marketing site.
What the same capability costs at 500 subscribers
Feature availability is only half the decision. The other half is the denominator each vendor bills on, and the denominators are not comparable.
Take a store with 500 active subscribers, a $50 average subscription order value, and 500 subscription orders per month — $25,000/month in subscription revenue. Transaction percentages are applied to that subscription volume, and per-transaction cents to the 500 orders.
| App | Plan required at this volume | Monthly fee | Variable | Estimated monthly total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Subscriptions | — | $0 | $0 | $0 (no cancellation flow) |
| Seal Subscriptions App | LEGEND (up to 500 subscriptions) | $24.95 | 0% | $24.95 |
| Appstle℠ Subscriptions App | BUSINESS PREMIUM (up to $100,000/month) | $100 | 0% | $100 |
| Loop Subscriptions App | Starter | $99 | 1.0% = $250 | $349 |
| PayWhirl Subscriptions | TRACTION | $29 | 1.5% = $375 | $404 |
| Recharge Subscriptions App | Starter | $99 | 1.49% ($372.50) + 19¢ × 500 ($95) | $566.50 |
| Skio, a Recharge Company | Scale | $599 | 1% ($250) + 20¢ × 500 ($100) | $949 |
Same 500 subscribers, same cancellation-flow requirement, a 38× spread between the cheapest and most expensive line. Note also that PayWhirl's FREE plan is not the cheap option at this scale: 3% of $25,000 is $750, well above the $404 TRACTION line. PayWhirl's listing states 0% fees "on your first $5,000 processed" without specifying whether that allowance is one-time or recurring, so confirm it with PayWhirl before modelling on it.
Now grow the store 10×. Seal's MEGA STAR is $199 flat for up to 50,000 subscriptions and Appstle's BUSINESS PREMIUM covers $100,000/month, while the percentage-based platforms scale linearly — Loop, Recharge, and Skio all pass four figures a month long before that point. The flat-fee apps get relatively cheaper as you grow; the percentage apps get relatively more expensive. That is the actual axis of this category, and it has nothing to do with which cancellation flow is better designed.
The seven apps, briefly
Seal Subscriptions App

Source: Shopify App Store (Seal Subscriptions App), retrieved September 5, 2026
Built for Shopify, rated 4.9 from 3,080 reviews. Custom subscription cancellation flow appears at RISING STAR ($9.95/month, 250 subscriptions); LEGEND ($24.95) adds retention and cancellation insight; MEGA STAR ($199) adds "cancellation treatments." Every plan carries a 0% transaction fee and paid plans include a 30-day free trial. The cheapest credible way to get reason capture in front of leaving subscribers.
PayWhirl Subscriptions

Source: Shopify App Store (PayWhirl Subscriptions), retrieved September 5, 2026
Built for Shopify, rated 4.7 from 190 reviews. The only app here that lists Cancellation Prevention Flows on a free-to-install plan. Paid tiers buy down the transaction rate: PRO $9/month at 2%, TRACTION $29/month at 1.5%, SCALE $149/month at 0.75%. Best for low-volume stores that want the flow immediately and would rather pay a percentage than a subscription-count fee.
Appstle℠ Subscriptions App

Source: Shopify App Store (Appstle℠ Subscriptions App), retrieved September 5, 2026
Built for Shopify, rated 5.0 from 8,580 reviews — the largest review base in this set. Retention Tools & Cancellation Control sits in BUSINESS at $30/month, covering up to $15,000/month in subscription revenue, with 0% transaction fees and a 14-day free trial. If your subscription revenue is between $5,000 and $15,000 a month, this is the cheapest flat-fee option that includes the flow.
Recharge Subscriptions App

Source: Shopify App Store (Recharge Subscriptions App), retrieved September 5, 2026
Rated 4.8 from 3,116 reviews. Smart Cancellation Prevention — described by Recharge as personalized flows with targeted offers, A/B testing, and smart branching — is included on every tier including the $25/month 25-50 plan. Starter is $99/month plus 1.49% + 19¢ per transaction with a 60-day free trial; Plus is $499/month plus 1.34% + 19¢. Recharge's own FAQ notes that Plus and Custom plans run on 12-month terms, so the cheap monthly entry point and the scaled plans have different commitment profiles.
Skio, a Recharge Company

Source: Shopify App Store (Skio, a Recharge Company), retrieved September 5, 2026
The listing name is the news. Recharge announced on April 30, 2026 that it had acquired Skio; press coverage puts the price at $105 million in cash, and both platforms continue to operate on a stated combined roadmap. Skio is rated 5.0 from 241 reviews and has a single published plan: Scale at $599/month, or $5,988/year (a 17% saving, equivalent to $499/month), plus a 1% + 20¢ fee on orders involving a subscription. Its Multi-Step Cancel Flow Builder ships in that plan alongside everything else; Skio publishes a single feature-complete tier, with Enterprise adding support and roadmap access rather than features. The App Store listing shows no free plan and no free trial. If you are evaluating Skio and Recharge as independent alternatives, they are no longer independent.
Loop Subscriptions App

Source: Shopify App Store (Loop Subscriptions App), retrieved September 5, 2026
Rated 5.0 from 747 reviews. Free Forever covers 50 active subscriptions but not cancellation flows; Personalized cancellation flows & offers arrive at Starter, $99/month plus 1.0% with no per-order fee. Pro is $399/month plus 0.75%. Loop's site links to a help-center article on complying with the California Automatic Renewal Law, which is a useful signal that the vendor treats the flow as a regulated surface rather than a pure conversion lever.
Choosing
- Under 50 subscribers, testing whether subscriptions work at all. Stay on Shopify Subscriptions. Accept that you will not learn why people leave, and revisit once churn is a number you actually manage.
- You want reason data at the lowest possible cost. Seal Subscriptions App RISING STAR, $9.95/month, 0% transaction fee.
- Low volume, and you would rather pay a rate than a fee. PayWhirl Subscriptions FREE, with the caveat about the $5,000 allowance.
- $5,000–$15,000/month in subscription revenue, want it flat. Appstle℠ Subscriptions App BUSINESS, $30/month.
- You want A/B-tested, branching save offers and treat retention as a growth channel. Recharge Subscriptions App, Loop Subscriptions App, or Skio — priced in that order at most volumes.
- You are already on a percentage plan and growing fast. Model the flat-fee alternatives at your projected 12-month volume before renewing. The crossover arrives earlier than most merchants assume.
One thing to decide before you install
Shopify's Help Center states that when you uninstall a subscription app, app-created data other than subscription contracts and customer payment information is deleted after 48 hours, recoverable only if the app has its own backup mechanism.
Cancellation reasons are app-created data. The survey responses that justify the app's cost live in the vendor's system, not in Shopify's. Before you commit to a flow builder, confirm how you export that data — because the reason a store buys a cancellation flow is to learn something, and the learning is the part that does not come with you when you leave.
