Shopify Has No Vacation Setting. The $9 Pause Plan Doesn't Pause Your Apps Either
Shopify's Help Center says it plainly: "Shopify doesn't have a vacation setting." What you get instead are four different ways to stop selling — private mode, the $9/month Pause and Build plan, full deactivation, and the frozen state you land in when a bill goes unpaid — and each one does something completely different to your app bill. Pause and Build turns off checkout across every sales channel but leaves every app installed and billing: "All your apps remain active after you pause your store." Deactivation force-uninstalls everything and charges your pending balance immediately. Missing a payment is the only state that freezes recurring app charges for you, and it costs you your admin and your storefront. Meanwhile listings like Klaviyo and Yotpo warn that charges may be billed outside your Shopify invoice, so uninstalling alone may not stop them. Researched September 6, 2026.
Shopify Put the Online Cart Inside POS. It Needs POS Pro, and It Never Closes the Abandoned Checkout
On September 3, 2026 Shopify shipped a POS feature that lets store staff see an identified customer's abandoned online cart and pull those items into the POS cart. Three things go unmentioned in most coverage: the permission that unlocks it is a POS role permission, and POS roles exist only at locations on the $89/month POS Pro subscription; the customer must have reached checkout and typed an email, so browse-only shoppers are invisible; and adding the items to the POS cart does not mark the abandoned checkout completed, so the 'Items in online cart' note keeps showing after the customer has already paid at the counter. That is cart visibility, not clienteling. Endear AI-Powered Clienteling, BSPK Clienteling and CRM, and GettingKinder: Clienteling CRM price the remaining gap on three completely different units — $350/month per store location, a custom plan you cannot see before installing, and $49/month flat. Shopify Ships Exactly Two Product Badges — Here's What the Label Apps Charge for the Third
Dawn and Horizon render a Sale badge and a Sold out badge, and nothing else — no admin screen creates a New or Best seller badge. We read both theme repos to confirm what drives them, then priced five label apps whose billing units do not compare: labels times products, rule counts, badge counts, and condition tiers. Plus the Shopify Plus surcharge two of them charge, and the October 1, 2026 script tag deadline that makes one app's data scopes worth a second look. Researched September 6, 2026.
Shopify Built an AI Shopper Simulator. Its Own App Store Rating Is 2.8, and 30% of the Ratings Are One Star
Shopify SimGym went from waitlist to general availability on March 11, 2026, backed by 48 NVIDIA B200 GPUs and 400,000 simulated shopping sessions a day. On September 6, 2026 its Shopify App Store listing sits at 2.8 stars from 37 reviews, with 30% of ratings at one star. The recurring complaint across US, Swedish and Japanese reviews is the same: the AI shoppers report broken links, broken checkout buttons and out-of-stock variants that are not broken or out of stock. Shopify's own reply says the team is working to reduce false positives. On top of that, SimGym requires Shopify Network Intelligence — a privacy setting whose disable flow makes you type UNINSTALL — bills in credits you cannot buy, and never completes a checkout: the winning theme is the one with the highest add-to-cart rate. Avada Shop Sim and Ferrum Store Health App price the same territory on entirely different units. Researched September 6, 2026.
Amazon is switching off its old MCF app on September 30 — and the App Store listing doesn't mention it
Amazon says it will deactivate the Amazon MCF: US Fulfillment app on September 30, 2026, but the app's Shopify App Store listing still shows a normal Install button with no notice. Here is what the replacement app does and doesn't do — 250-unit order caps, no returns, no bulk SKU mapping, fees visible only in Seller Central — and how Amazon MCF by WebBee and Amazon MCF by ByteStand price the gaps at $5 to $95 per month. Shopify Says App Store Review Removals Have 'No End Date' — So Stop Shortlisting Apps by Star Rating
On July 6, 2026 Shopify introduced a dedicated App Store requirement on review incentivization and started unpublishing untrusted reviews in bulk. On September 3 it began restoring some of them, and on September 4 a Shopify staff member confirmed there is no end date: reviews visible today may be hidden tomorrow, and vice versa. That makes review counts a live number, not a record. Meanwhile the overall rating was never an average — Klaviyo's published distribution works out to 4.60 but the listing shows 4.7. Here is what the App Store actually tells you, including the two URL parameters that surface what the stars hide. Researched September 5, 2026.
Shopify gift cards stop at $2,000 in the admin — and that is the cheapest limit you will hit
Shopify gift cards ship on every plan, but the admin caps each issued card at $2,000, creates them one at a time, and — for stores created on or after May 12, 2025 — charges a third-party transaction fee on the portion of an order paid with one. Here is what native covers, and how Rise, Gift Card Factory, Vify, GiftKart, and Bulk Gift Cards price the gaps. Researched September 5, 2026.
Hiding a payment method at Shopify checkout: the rule US non-Plus stores can build but not enforce
Payment customization apps work on Basic and up, but in the United States and Canada a non-Plus store cannot hide, rename, or reorder the credit card field — and the app will let you save the rule anyway. Here is what actually applies, plus how ETP Sort Hide Payment Methods, HidePay, Kedra Checkout Rules & Upsells, and Shopify Checkout Blocks price the rest. Researched September 5, 2026.
