Three Dropdowns Are Not Fitment: Why Shopify's Filters Can't Tell a 2015 Toyota From a 2015 Honda
Shopify has no vehicle fitment data model, and the reason Search & Discovery can't fake one is structural: filters are independent facets, AND-ed across and OR-ed within, so Year + Make + Model returns parts that fit a 2015 Honda and a 2020 Toyota when a shopper asks for a 2015 Toyota. The hard numbers behind that: 25 filters per store, no filters at all on collections over 5,000 products, 100 filter values displayed, 128 items in a list metafield (1,024 for metaobject references), 250 tags per product on non-Plus plans. The Auto Care Association's VCdb — the table ACES fitment is written against — publishes 175,500+ vehicle applications and 2.4 million+ vehicle system configurations. Seven real fitment apps priced on September 9, 2026 meter on six incompatible units — YMM rows, YMM combinations, fitment lookups counted once for the lifetime of the account, product count, product-fitment assignments, and nothing published at all. Only one carries the Built for Shopify badge, three launched with zero reviews, and two of those launched on the same day in June 2026.
Shopify Has Two YouTube Shopping Doors. One Wants 1,000 Subscribers, the Other Wants the $299 Plan.
The Google & YouTube app is free to install, but "YouTube Shopping" on Shopify is not one feature behind one door. It is two, and they gate on completely different things. Tagging products on your own channel needs 1,000 subscribers and an approved monetization status — no Shopify plan requirement at all. Letting other creators tag your products needs Shopify Advanced or Plus, a US billing address, USD as your store currency, and Google's own automated product sync — which means a third-party feed app disqualifies you. The two paths even disagree about music channels: Shopify's requirements say a music channel must be an Official Artist Channel, while Google's creator rules exclude Official Artist Channels outright. Shopify Made Copycat App Names a Violation in July. Two of the First Three Results for "Wishlist" Still Have "Wishlist Plus" in the Name.
On July 15, 2026, Shopify published App Store requirement 4.1.2: every app must have a unique name that leads with a distinctive brand identifier. Enforcement rolls out in waves, so the search results you use today are the pre-enforcement ones. We searched the en-US App Store on September 16, 2026: 23 of the top 24 results for "wishlist" have "Wishlist" in the name, 20 of the top 24 for "product reviews" contain the exact phrase "Product Reviews," and 19 of those 24 wishlist apps carry the Built for Shopify badge — so the badge doesn't separate them either. The listing URL is the one identifier that never changes, and it is frequently a fossil of a name the app dropped years ago: apps.shopify.com/air-reviews is now "AG Product Reviews App & UGC," apps.shopify.com/email-1 is a back-in-stock app, apps.shopify.com/customer-accounts is a wishlist app. Verified against shopify.dev requirements, the July 15 Shopify announcement, the Shopify Help Center, and live en-US App Store listings on September 16, 2026.
Shopify Shipped 20 Barcodes per Variant and Told Merchants Nothing Would Break. The Developer Post, Same Day, Warns of "Silent Truncation."
On September 8, 2026, Shopify shipped multiple barcodes per product variant — up to 20, each optionally typed as UPC, EAN, ISBN, GTIN or ASIN. The merchant changelog says your labels, sales channel feeds, and apps 'keep working exactly as they do today.' The developer changelog, published the same day, says an integration reading only the old barcode field 'sees one of them with no signal that others exist' under a heading that reads 'Be aware of potential silent truncation.' Both are true, because everything downstream now depends on which barcode sits in position one. The admin's default barcode type is Custom, which turns validation off. The product CSV fails to import if it contains both a Barcode and a Barcodes column. Matrixify's documentation still describes a single Variant Barcode field and uses it as a matching key. Shopify Marketplace Connect's own Amazon help article tells you to put your GTIN in 'the barcode field.' Your Reviews Live in Two Places Now — and Only One of Them Fits in a CSV
Shopify's Help Center contains one sentence that decides how a review app migration turns out: reviews migrated between partner apps using a CSV aren't eligible to display in Shop. Since the standard product review syndication program went generally available on June 6, 2025, approved apps write every review into a metaobject in your own store — so a migration is really two migrations, and the CSV is the worse one. Judge.me's export drops videos, SKUs, order details and verified status. Yotpo's import treats every incoming review as anonymous. Loox caps you at 100,000 imported reviews forever and gives you seven days to undo. Okendo lets you type TRUE into an isVerifiedBuyer column. Judge.me refuses to mark anything verified by hand. Compared on export contents, import limits, what restores the verified badge, and what it costs to land the reviews: Judge.me Product Reviews App, Loox ‑ Product Reviews App, Yotpo: Product Reviews App, Okendo: Reviews & Loyalty, and Stamped Reviews & Loyalty.
