Shopify's WordPress Plugin Asks You to Publish a Theme That Turns Your Storefront Off — and Your App Stack Lives on That Storefront

Shopify launched the Sell on WordPress sales channel on September 15, 2025. To actually send buyers to WordPress you publish the Sell on WordPress theme — a redirect theme — to your Online Store. That matters because Shopify's own App surfaces table puts theme app extensions and web pixels on the Online store surface: move the storefront and every app that renders through an app block or app embed has nowhere to render. Checkout, admin, customer accounts, POS and Flow surfaces survive. Also: the plugin is Gutenberg-only with PHP-file customization, shopify.dev points you to a WordPress.org page that returns a 404, and the $5 Starter and Lite plans everyone still recommends are closed to new stores. Compared Sell on WordPress (free, 1.7 from 4 reviews), Buy Button channel (free, 3.9 from 183 reviews) and ShopWP ($199/year). Verified September 9, 2026.

Shopify Has No Native In-Cart Shipping Calculator. Every App That Adds One Calls the Same Ajax Endpoint — and It Broke Twice in 2026

Shopify's free themes show 'Taxes and shipping calculated at checkout' and stop there. There is no native in-cart shipping estimator. What exists is the Cart Ajax API — POST /cart/prepare_shipping_rates.json and GET /cart/async_shipping_rates.json, plus a throttled GET /cart/shipping_rates.json — and every cart calculator app on the App Store is a wrapper around it. That is a single point of failure, and it failed on the record twice this year: a Shopify change returned 422 errors on January 27, 2026 and was rolled back January 28; the same change reappeared February 3 and was rolled back February 6. Market-driven shipping starts rolling out October 1, 2026 and changes how rates combine, and in the feature preview these same endpoints returned 'Country/region not supported' for addresses that priced fine at checkout. Here is what Shopify gives you for free, why cart estimators and checkout rate engines are different products, and verified USD pricing for CBB Shipping Rates Calculator, Dr Cart Shipping Rates & Rules, FP1 - Cart Shipping Calculator, and SMART Shipping Rates & Rules. Shopify documentation, developer forum threads, and App Store listings verified September 9, 2026.

Five Shopify AI Voice Agents, One Call Volume, $169 to $499 — and Shopify Has No Consent Checkbox for Phone Calls

Shopify's checkout Marketing opt-in section offers three channels: Email, SMS, and WhatsApp. There is no phone-call option, and no call-consent record on the customer. That matters because the fastest-growing pitch in this category is outbound calls to shoppers who abandoned checkout — and the FCC ruled in February 2024 that AI-generated voices are 'artificial' under the TCPA, which puts those calls under the prior-express-written-consent rule in 47 CFR 64.1200. Meanwhile only three of the five apps here can be priced at all: Ava AI, CallFlows and Consio bill included minutes plus overage, Loop bills undefined 'credits', and Shoplabs publishes 'usage charges' with no rate. Model the same 1,500 minutes a month against every published tier and the bill runs from $169 to $499 — with a 2.7x gap between two tiers of the same app. Verified against primary sources on September 11, 2026.

Shopify Says Multi-Currency Payouts Let You "Avoid Currency Exchange Fees." The Same Help Page Lists the Fee.

US merchants got Multi-Currency Payouts for the first time on June 13, 2026, and Shopify expanded the feature twice more before September was over. The Help Center describes it as a way to avoid currency exchange fees — then, further down the same page, documents a Multi-Currency Payout fee of 1% for US stores on Advanced and 0.75% on Plus. Set against the 1.5% currency conversion fee it replaces, the real saving is half a percentage point, not the whole thing. Basic, Grow and Shopify plans are excluded entirely. And the fee is charged on the payout currency, not on whether a conversion happened — so a US store can be paid in USD and still be billed. Plus what A2X Sync for QuickBooks & Xero, QuickBooks Online and Xero actually do with the extra payout streams. Shopify's Blog Editor Can Make a Heading but Not an Anchor — So Every Table of Contents App Writes the IDs in Your Reader's Browser

Shopify's rich text editor offers Heading 1 through Heading 6 and no way to give any of them an id. Shopify's own Help Center page for blog posts never mentions a table of contents, anchors, or headings. We fetched three long articles from a live US Shopify store: 20, 24, and 9 h2/h3 elements, and zero of them in the article body carried an id. Then we fetched a demo article running a TOC app: the server HTML contains id="toc- zero times, and after JavaScript runs, 9 of 9 headings have one. That is the whole category in one sentence. Compared five real apps — Easy Table of Contents 2.0, RuffRuff Table of Contents, Smart Table of Contents, Jump Links ‑ Table of Contents, and Auto Table of Contents — on USD pricing, what the free tier withholds, and placement. Between them: 35 reviews, one Built for Shopify badge, one admin that is not translated into English, and one developer who admitted in a public reply that uninstalling leaves code behind. Also why 'Google jump-link schema' is a paid feature for an output Google documents as automated. Verified September 10, 2026.

Shopify's Knowledge Base App Decides What AI Says About Your Store. We Asked Four Live Stores the Same Question and Three Couldn't Name a Return Window

Shopify Knowledge Base is a free first-party app that edits the FAQ layer AI shopping agents read when someone asks about your store. It rates 3.6 across 29 reviews, with seventeen five-star ratings, five one-star ratings, and exactly zero four-star ratings. We called the unauthenticated /api/mcp endpoint on four live US stores with the same question: only one returned return-policy detail, and the other three had a single line — contact the merchant. The answers are assembled from Shopify settings, not from your written policy pages, and one store's reply still carries the template seam `31 days days`. Auto-generated FAQs can be overridden but never deleted, and Shopify's developer docs tell agent builders to use only what this tool returns. Verified against primary sources and live endpoints on September 13, 2026.

Two Columns and a Prayer: What Actually Survives a Shopify Loyalty App Migration

Every loyalty vendor publishes a 'migrate to us' guide. None of them publish what you lose. The honest answer is that most Shopify loyalty migrations move exactly two columns — email and points — and drop earning history, VIP tier history, points expiry dates, referral links, and unredeemed discount codes on the floor. Smile.io's own documentation says its CSV import accepts only `email` and `points`, is not reversible, and skips any row whose email doesn't match. LoyaltyLion won't let you self-serve at all: you email the file to an onboarding manager, and tiers require a separate file. BON Loyalty's team runs the import for you. Joy Loyalty gates migration behind its paid plans. Only Rivo publishes API-based automated migrations — from Yotpo and LoyaltyLion specifically — that carry points history, redemption history, and tier memberships, and even those require tier names to match and your programs to be switched off first. Meanwhile Shopify's native store credit, which is on by default, gives you something no points ledger does: a balance the platform itself accounts for. Pricing, ratings, and review counts verified on the Shopify App Store in the en-US locale on September 9, 2026.

Shopify Product Network Takes Five Placements on Your Store. Shopify Does Not Publish the Commission Rate for Any of Them.

Shopify Product Network is a free app, made by Shopify, that puts other brands' products into your search results, collection pages, Thank you page, Order status page and Shopify Messaging emails. You earn a commission — but across six Help Center pages, an App Store listing and a Shopify blog post, the rate is never stated. Compare that to Rokt Thanks inside Aftersell Post Purchase Upsell, which names its number on the App Store listing: up to $0.80 per order. Product Network orders are also excluded from your sales reports, and 'webhooks and Shopify Flow automations don't apply' — so every analytics, loyalty and helpdesk app you run is blind to them. The listing sits at 3.5 stars across 87 reviews, with 24 of those one star. Verified against primary sources on September 11, 2026.
