Your Shopify Demand Forecast Is Trained on Data That Deletes Your Stockouts
Shopify's inventory reports never record the units customers wanted while you were out of stock, and the native days-of-inventory report divides by a 28-day average that a stockout drags to zero. Only one of six forecasting apps documents a stockout correction as a setting you can switch on — and it can only see stockouts from the day you install it. Plus four incompatible pricing denominators: revenue bands, backorder volume, your Shopify plan tier, and feature tier. Nobody bills by SKU count. Researched September 2, 2026.
Orders, Hours, or Minutes Watched: The Three Meters Shopify Live Selling Apps Bill You On
Shopify has no native livestream selling feature, and the apps that add it do not compete on price — they compete on what they count. SoldLive meters live sale orders at exactly $1 each across all four published tiers. LiveMeUp meters hours you broadcast and explicitly leaves views unlimited. Channelize meters viewing minutes your audience consumes, so a stream that goes well is what pushes you into the next tier. Shopify's own guide flags that cap. The same one-hour event can land at $75 or $297 depending only on which meter you signed up for. Three real apps compared on their published USD pricing. Researched September 2, 2026.
Shopify's Local Delivery Vanishes the Moment a Customer Taps Apple Pay
Shopify ships local delivery and pickup in store for free, and most merchants never read the limits. Local delivery is not offered to anyone who starts checkout with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, or PayPal — only Shop Pay survives. The Out for delivery and Delivered emails never fire, because they are triggered by carrier tracking events and local delivery generates none. Customers can't mix shipped and locally delivered items in one order. Mixing shipped and pickup items is possible, but it's a Plus and Enterprise feature test drive that doesn't reach all of Plus until July 1, 2027 — and Shopify's pickup page describes it as though it already works for everyone. Plus the hard caps: 100 miles, 10 zones, 3 conditional price rules, 3,000 characters. Five real scheduling apps compared, metering five different things. Researched September 2, 2026.
Shopify Counts Units, Not Lots — and Multi-Location Batch Tracking Costs Anywhere From $19.99 to $199 a Month
Shopify's own definition of inventory is a count: "the number of each product variant that you have available to sell." A count cannot tell you which lot shipped to which customer, which is exactly what a recall requires. Nothing in the Shopify admin stores a lot number or an expiry date. We checked three real batch-tracking apps on the US App Store on September 2, 2026 and found the same capability priced at $19.99 and $199 depending on which listing you open — because each one meters a different thing: Freshly caps the free plan at 10 products, Batchly caps it at 1 product but allows unlimited locations, and Batch ExpiryPro sells multi-location for $19.99 with zero reviews behind it. Also: the FDA's own Food Traceability Rule page still displays a compliance date of January 20, 2026.
Managed Markets Reviews Every Product You Sell — and Anything It Hasn't Cleared Can't Be Published to Your Online Store
Managed Markets hands merchant-of-record duties to Global-e for 3.5% (3.25% on Plus) plus a 1.5% FX fee, with no monthly minimum. What almost nobody reads first is the product review gate. Shopify's Help Center lists 35 restricted product categories, and its own status table says products sitting in In review or Product unsupported can't be published to your online store. Subscriptions are stripped from international markets, B2B and free orders are excluded, PayPal is unsupported, and the compatible-destination table lists Canada and the United Kingdom but not the United States. We also counted the currency table: 152 codes, at least eight of which no longer exist. Researched September 2, 2026.
Shopify Marketplace Connect covers four US marketplaces, not six — and Etsy is closed to new sellers
Shopify Marketplace Connect is free to install and connects Amazon, Target Plus, Walmart, and eBay. It does not connect TikTok Shop at all, and new Etsy connections cannot be made — existing Etsy sellers keep working, everyone else is locked out. Target Plus and Walmart are United States only, and Target Plus orders cannot use Amazon or Walmart fulfillment. Shopify also publishes a list of metafield types Marketplace Connect ignores, including Metaobject, Files, Money, and Rich Text, and inventory location cannot be set per variant. This compares the free Shopify app against five real apps that fill those specific gaps, with the actual per-order and per-GMV math at 800 orders a month. Researched September 2, 2026.
Shopify Sends US Text Messages Itself Now — $0.012 per SMS, $2.15 a Month, and a Toll-Free Number That Cannot Receive Replies
Shopify Messaging sends SMS marketing campaigns directly, and Shopify publishes the US rate: $0.012 per message, plus $2.15 a month for the toll-free number. Postscript's cheapest tier is $0.009 per SMS plus roughly $0.00418 in carrier fees and a $49 monthly minimum, which makes Shopify cheaper per message than the cheapest plan of the most-reviewed SMS-only app in this comparison. The catches are real and specific: your toll-free number is randomly assigned and cannot receive customer replies, fourteen content categories are banned outright including alcohol, CBD, vape and firearms, only twelve recipient countries are supported, and US coverage excludes Puerto Rico. Full cost math at 10,000 and 50,000 messages a month against Postscript, Omnisend, and Attentive. Researched September 2, 2026.
Shopify Metaobjects Publish Real Pages Into Your sitemap.xml — and the App That Created Them Can't Delete Them After You Uninstall
Shopify documents exactly four metaobject capabilities, and two of them are quietly an SEO feature: renderable exposes meta title and description and puts entries into sitemap.xml, and onlineStore assigns a theme template and a real URL. That combination turns structured data into indexable pages without a page builder. The limits are published too — 128 definitions on Basic, Shopify and Advanced, 256 on Plus and Enterprise, 40 fields per definition, one million entries per definition, and a separate 128 for every installed app. Meanwhile the apps actually named after metaobjects have four reviews between the top two, and Matrixify meters metaobjects at 50 per file on a $20 plan.
